With NEET UG 2026 results declared, the next hurdle is counselling — and every year students with good ranks lose seats simply by getting the process wrong. Here's a clear guide to the MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) process for the 2026 cycle.
> Status: As of late July 2026, MCC has not published the official Round 1 schedule. Round 1 registration is expected around August 1–10, 2026. Confirm every date on mcc.nic.in — this guide explains the process, not a promised timetable.
The Two Counselling Streams
**MCC All India Quota (AIQ) — 15%** of seats in state government colleges, plus **100%** of seats in Deemed & Central Universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC, and AFMC. Run centrally at mcc.nic.in.**State Quota — 85%** of state government college seats, run by each state's own counselling authority on its own portal. You can — and usually should — participate in both.
MCC Round Structure
MCC typically conducts Round 1 → Round 2 → Round 3 (Mop-up) → Stray Vacancy. Each round has the same rhythm:

Choice-Filling Strategy That Works
**Order by genuine preference, not just cutoff.** MCC allots the highest-preference seat your rank can reach — so put your real first choice first, even if it feels ambitious.**Fill a long list.** Don't stop at 10 choices when you can add 50. Vacancies shift round to round.**Understand free exit vs resignation.** In early rounds you may exit without penalty; in later rounds, resigning or not joining an allotted seat can forfeit your security deposit or bar you from further rounds. Read that year's business rules carefully.**Don't skip Round 1 waiting for "something better."** A held Round 1 seat can be upgraded in Round 2 — but sitting out Round 1 entirely is a common, costly mistake.AIQ vs State Quota — Which to Prioritise
If your rank is strong, AIQ opens doors to top colleges nationwide. If it's a state-domicile-advantaged rank, your home-state 85% quota often yields a better college than AIQ. Run both and compare allotments before committing.

Bottom line: NEET counselling rewards preparation, not just rank. Register the day MCC opens Round 1, keep documents scanned and ready, fill a long honest preference list, and track both AIQ and state schedules on their official portals.
