COEP, founded in 1854, is among the oldest engineering institutions in Asia; Sir M. Visvesvaraya is counted among its alumni, and it has since been converted into a unitary state technological university in Pune. Its riverside campus, complete with a historic boat club and rowing tradition, sits in the middle of the city. Admission is through MHT-CET, where its cutoffs are the benchmark for Maharashtra's government-fee engineering seats, with computer science the most competitive branch. The university holds an A++ grade from NAAC. The combination it offers — subsidised fees, Pune's large technology and manufacturing job market, and an alumni network built over a century and a half of engineering education — is hard to match. It suits high-scoring students who want maximum value without private-university fees.
