Pune, Pune, Maharashtra
Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute in Pune occupies one of the oldest academic sites in western India, and was re-established in 1939 as a research institute; today it holds deemed-university status. Its scholarly identity is highly specific: it is among India's foremost centres for archaeology and linguistics, fields in which its departments, museums and dictionary projects — including the monumental Sanskrit dictionary undertaking — are nationally significant. It holds an A grade from NAAC. This is fundamentally a postgraduate and research institution; students come for masters and doctoral work with fieldwork, excavation experience and philological training, not for conventional campus life or placements. Pune's wider academic ecosystem surrounds it. It suits students set on careers in archaeology, linguistics or heritage institutions — the Archaeological Survey, museums, universities — for whom its specialised pedigree matters more than breadth.
