Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University in Hyderabad, established in 1982, was India's first open university and remains the model that later state open universities followed. It exists for learners who cannot attend a conventional campus: working adults, homemakers and students in smaller towns study through self-learning material, weekend contact classes and a network of study centres spread across Telangana. Commerce and management are among its larger enrolment areas. The university holds a NAAC 'A' grade, and its degrees carry UGC recognition like any other university's. Fees are among the lowest in higher education. It suits people upgrading qualifications alongside a job, or those returning to study after a gap — but not students looking for campus life, hostels or placement support, which distance education does not provide.
