Howrah, Howrah, West Bengal
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology at Shibpur grew out of the colonial-era Bengal Engineering College, one of the earliest engineering schools established in India, and today operates as an Institute of National Importance. Its riverside campus in Howrah faces central Kolkata across the Hooghly, giving students a contained campus life with a major city within easy reach. Undergraduate admission is through JEE Main, and the institute's depth lies in the core engineering branches — civil and mechanical especially — with computer science and information technology now drawing the highest cutoffs. It holds a NIRF rank of 40 and an A grade from NAAC. Fees are at central government levels. It suits students who value institutional heritage, a strong core-engineering faculty and Kolkata's affordability over newer, flashier campuses.
