Kolkata, Kolkata, West Bengal
The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research operates jointly with the SSKM Hospital in central Kolkata, one of West Bengal's principal government teaching hospitals and its busiest referral centre. Though it began as a postgraduate institute, its defining feature is clinical volume: patients arrive from across the state and beyond, so trainees in general medicine, general surgery and paediatrics see a breadth of cases that smaller hospitals cannot offer. The institute holds an NIRF rank of 23 in the medical category and an A grade from NAAC. Being in the heart of Kolkata means the city is at the doorstep, though hostel and hospital infrastructure carries the wear of an old public institution. It suits doctors who value case exposure, government fees and public-hospital training over polished facilities.
