NIT Campus, Silchar, Silchar, Assam
National Institute of Technology Silchar, established in 1967 as a regional engineering college, is one of the principal engineering institutions of the Northeast, set on a 612-acre residential campus outside Silchar in Assam's Barak Valley. Admission is through JEE Main and JoSAA at subsidised NIT fees, with a home-state quota for Assam; computer science and electronics draw the tightest closing ranks. The location is remote by mainland standards — connectivity to the rest of the country is mainly by air and a long rail loop — so campus life is self-contained, something many students come to value. It holds a NIRF rank of 58 in engineering and an A NAAC grade. It suits JEE Main candidates, especially from the Northeast, who want an established NIT and are comfortable with distance from metro India.
