Itanagar, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh
North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, better known as NERIST, was established in 1981 at Itanagar specifically to build scientific and technical capacity in the North East, and it remains one of the region's principal centrally supported technical institutions. Its distinctive feature is a modular academic structure: students can enter after school and progress through certificate and diploma stages into a full degree, an unusual ladder that gives multiple entry and exit points. Admission is through the institute's own entrance examination, with seats oriented towards students from the north-eastern states. Engineering teaching covers the core branches, with computer science and electronics prominent. NAAC has graded it A. The Itanagar setting is quiet and remote; NERIST suits students from the region who want an established government technical institution close to home.
