K R Circle, Bangalore, Karnataka
University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering — UVCE — was founded in 1917 by Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the engineer-statesman whose name it carries, making it Karnataka's oldest engineering college and one of the earliest in the country. It sits in the very centre of Bangalore under Bangalore University, with recent reforms granting it greater autonomy modelled on the national institutes. Its government fee structure is a fraction of what neighbouring private colleges charge for comparable outcomes, which makes its entrance cutoffs formidable, with computer science the most contested branch. It holds an A grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 90. Infrastructure is older than the private competition; the brand, alumni network and economics compensate. It suits high-ranking students who want central-Bangalore engineering at public-college cost, and who judge colleges by substance rather than paint.
