India has 20 IIMs, and they're not all equal. CAT cutoffs range from 99.5+ percentile (IIM Ahmedabad) to 85+ percentile (new baby IIMs). Here's how to target the right IIM for your profile.
The Three Tiers of IIMs
Tier 1 — "Old IIMs" (Established Pre-2010)
These are internationally recognized, have the best placements, and the tightest cutoffs.

Sectional cutoffs also apply — many students with 99.5+ overall percentile get rejected because they missed VARC or DILR sectional cutoffs.
Tier 2 — "New IIMs" (2008-2011)
Good placements, smaller cohorts, decent brand.

Tier 3 — "Baby IIMs" (2014-2016)
Newest, still building reputation. Placements are decent but not exceptional.

Beyond Percentile — The Selection Process
1. CAT Cutoff — Just your ticket to the next round, not admission.
2. PI-WAT Round — Personal Interview + Written Ability Test. 30-40% weight.
3. Class 10/12/UG Academic Scores — Diversity factors. Non-engineers and female candidates get slight preference at some IIMs.
4. Work Experience — IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore give weight to 2+ years of work ex.
