Chidambaram, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu
Annamalai University in Chidambaram, established in 1929 by the philanthropist Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, is one of Tamil Nadu's oldest universities and among the largest unitary residential universities in the country — teaching happens on its own vast campus rather than through affiliated colleges. Its faculties span the humanities and well beyond, and it has long run one of India's biggest distance-education operations. The university holds an A+ grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 87, with fees that stay affordable under state oversight. Chidambaram is a temple town in the Cauvery delta: quiet, inexpensive and deeply traditional, so campus life is self-contained. It suits students who want an established, low-cost residential university in Tamil Nadu, and distance learners across the state for whom its programmes remain a standard route.
