Silchar, Silchar, Assam
Assam University, established in 1994, is a central university at Silchar, and its importance is regional as much as academic: it is the principal higher-education institution of the Barak Valley, the southern part of Assam that is culturally and geographically distinct from the Brahmaputra valley and far from Guwahati's institutions. Its Dargakona campus, set among low hills outside Silchar, hosts departments across the humanities, commerce, law, management and sciences, and it also anchors the valley's college system. Central status keeps fees very low, with admission through CUET. The university holds an A grade from NAAC. Silchar is a modest, affordable town with limited industry, so campus life is residential and placements are not the draw. It suits students from southern Assam and neighbouring states seeking an inexpensive central-university degree close to home.
