Kolkata, Kolkata, West Bengal
Bethune College in Kolkata is a landmark in the history of women's education: established in 1879, it is regarded as the first women's college in Asia, and it has taught generations of Bengal's women scholars, scientists and public figures from its north Kolkata campus. Today it remains a government women's college affiliated to the University of Calcutta, teaching humanities and sciences, with English, economics, history and political science among its established departments. It holds an A grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 80, and its government fee structure keeps study inexpensive. The college is compact and urban, near the College Street academic quarter. It suits women students in Bengal who want history, rigour and affordability in a single-sex institution, and who value pedigree over modern campus sprawl.
