Chennai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Chennai Mathematical Institute is unlike almost any other undergraduate destination in India: a small, research-first institution, founded in 1989, devoted to mathematics, computer science and physics, with a faculty active in serious research and class sizes closer to a tutorial system than a college. It holds deemed-university status and an A+ grade from NAAC, and admission is through its own national entrance examination, with strong olympiad performance also recognised — the intake is tiny and self-selecting. Its graduates go on, in striking proportion, to doctoral programmes at leading departments in India and abroad, which is the institution's real currency. The campus sits at Siruseri on Chennai's southern IT corridor. It suits mathematically gifted students set on research careers, and is a poor fit for anyone whose priority is conventional placement.
