Elphinstone College, established in 1856, is one of the oldest colleges in India and occupies a Gothic heritage building in Mumbai's Fort district, opposite the city's museum quarter. Its alumni register reads like a history of modern India — Dr B. R. Ambedkar and Dadabhai Naoroji among them — and the college helped seed several of Mumbai's other major institutions. Now part of a state cluster university, it continues to teach the humanities at government fees, with English, history and economics its traditional strengths, and holds a NAAC 'A' grade. The Fort location places students amid libraries, archives, courts and the city's cultural life. It suits students who value history, affordability and a central Mumbai address, and who can accept ageing infrastructure as the price of studying inside a monument.
