Gauhati University

Gauhati University, established in 1948, was the first university in Northeast India, and much of the region's higher education system grew out of it — a large number of colleges across Assam still operate under its affiliation. Its campus at Jalukbari sits on the western edge of Guwahati near the Brahmaputra, combining postgraduate departments with the administrative machinery of a big affiliating university. It holds an A grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 67. For students, the university's own departments are the draw: costs are low, the degree carries weight throughout the Northeast, and Guwahati is the region's commercial and transport hub. It suits students from Assam and neighbouring states who want an established public university close to home rather than migrating to Delhi or Bengaluru for further study.
