Kuvempu University

Kuvempu University, named after the celebrated Kannada poet, was established in 1987 with its Jnana Sahyadri campus at Shankaraghatta near Shimoga, in the green Malnad country of Karnataka's Western Ghats fringe. It is a state university with an A grade from NAAC, teaching postgraduate and undergraduate programmes across the arts, sciences and social sciences — English and the social sciences are established departments — and affiliating colleges across the surrounding districts. The campus setting is its signature: rural, forested and close to the Bhadra reservoir, making for a calm residential academic life at state-university fees. Shimoga town, the nearest urban centre, is a comfortable mid-sized district headquarters. The university suits students from central Karnataka seeking an affordable, recognised degree in a serene environment, particularly for higher study, teaching or research; corporate placement activity is limited.
