Madurai, Madurai, Tamil Nadu
Madurai Kamaraj University, established in 1966, is southern Tamil Nadu's major state university, combining postgraduate teaching departments on its Palkalai Nagar campus with the affiliating role for colleges across the Madurai region and one of the country's older distance-education operations. Its humanities departments — English, economics, history and political science among them — are long established. The university holds an A++ grade from NAAC, the highest band, and a NIRF rank of 87, a strong external endorsement for a state affiliating university. Madurai is a historic temple city with very low living costs and good rail connectivity across the south, and fees follow the modest state pattern. It suits students from southern Tamil Nadu seeking affordable postgraduate education close to home, and distance learners statewide for whom its programmes remain a familiar, recognised route.
