Shillong, Shillong, Meghalaya
North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is a central university established in 1973 in Shillong, created to serve the hill states of the Northeast, and for decades it was the parent university for colleges across Meghalaya. Its postgraduate departments — sciences, humanities and management among them — are the academic core, set on a large forested campus in the Shillong hills with a genuinely residential character. As a central university it charges regulated, modest fees and admits through national processes, drawing students from across the region. It holds an A grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 67. It suits students from the Northeast seeking a central-university degree without leaving the region, and students from elsewhere attracted to postgraduate study in a small, temperate hill city rather than a congested metro.
