Itanagar, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh
Rajiv Gandhi University at Rono Hills near Itanagar began in 1984 as Arunachal Pradesh's first university and remains the state's academic centre of gravity — the institution through which most of Arunachal's college education flows. Its teaching departments concentrate on the humanities and social sciences, with English, economics, history and political science among the established offerings, and it has since been brought under central funding, which keeps fees among the lowest available anywhere. It holds an A grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 84. The campus setting above the Dikrong valley is scenic and remote, and Itanagar is a small capital city. It suits students from Arunachal Pradesh and the eastern Himalaya who want a recognised, inexpensive university close to home, and researchers drawn to the region's cultures, languages and ecology.
