Belagavi, Belagavi, Karnataka
Rani Channamma University in Belagavi, named after the queen of Kittur who fought the British, was carved out in 2010 to serve the colleges of Karnataka's northern Belagavi region, which previously looked to distant universities. It is a state university with UGC recognition and an A grade from NAAC, combining postgraduate departments on its Belagavi campus with a large affiliating role across the surrounding districts. Its teaching strength lies in the arts and humanities — English, economics, history and political science are established at both undergraduate and postgraduate level — at state-university fees. Belagavi itself is a sizeable, pleasant border city with a mixed Kannada–Marathi character, cheaper than Bengaluru and well connected to both Karnataka and Maharashtra. It suits students of the region who want an affordable, recognised state degree, particularly in the humanities, without migrating to a metro.
