SNDT Women's University, founded in 1916 by the reformer Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, was India's first university for women, and that founding mission still defines it. It operates campuses in Mumbai — including its historic Churchgate base — and serves women students across the arts, humanities and professional fields, with degrees recognised nationally. The university holds an A grade from NAAC and a NIRF rank of 98, and as a state institution its fees are low. Being in Mumbai gives students access to the country's largest commercial job market, internships and cultural life, while the women-only setting is often the decisive factor for families. It suits women students who want an affordable, historically significant university in a metropolis, particularly in the humanities and applied disciplines.
