Prayagraj, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh
The University of Allahabad in Prayagraj, established in 1887, is among the oldest modern universities in India and carries a deep association with the country's civil services and intellectual history; for much of the twentieth century it was a dominant force in northern academia. Today it is a central university with an A grade from NAAC, which keeps fees very low, and its commerce and law programmes are among the practical undergraduate routes on offer. Prayagraj remains one of north India's great examination cities, dense with coaching culture, libraries and an inexpensive student economy. The university suits students who want a historic public institution at minimal cost, particularly those whose ambitions run toward civil services, law or postgraduate academic study.
