Kalyani, Kalyani, West Bengal
The University of Kalyani, established in 1960, sits in the planned township of Kalyani in West Bengal's Nadia district and combines two roles: a residential campus with teaching and research departments — the sciences, including physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science, are its established ground — and an affiliating function for colleges across the surrounding districts. It is a state university with UGC recognition and an A grade from NAAC, charging government-scale fees. Kalyani itself is an unusual setting for Bengal: an orderly, green, planned town on the suburban rail line to Kolkata, quieter and cheaper than the metropolis but close enough for its libraries and opportunities, and increasingly home to new institutional campuses. It suits students, particularly in the sciences, who want affordable state-university education and research access in a calm town within Kolkata's orbit rather than inside the crowded city.
