West Bengal State University

West Bengal State University at Barasat, established in 2008, was created to take over the affiliating burden for the large belt of colleges in the district immediately north of Kolkata — so for most of its students it is the university whose name appears on the degree earned at a local college. Its own Barasat campus runs postgraduate and undergraduate teaching with the humanities — English, economics, history and political science — at its core, at government-scale fees; it holds UGC recognition and an A grade from NAAC. Barasat sits on Kolkata's suburban rail network, which is the university's quiet advantage: students keep metropolitan libraries, coaching and employment within commuting distance while living in a far cheaper satellite town. The institution is young and regional rather than prestigious. It suits students of the district seeking an affordable, recognised state degree without relocating into Kolkata.
